Every New Year, I get in the mood to reorganize all of my stuff. I start looking for creative storage alternatives to consider. This usually leads me into the never-ending world of organization. I start getting overwhelmed and I don’t know where to turn. Is there such a thing as being too organized?  I decided to throw together a list of clever, creative storage alternatives that will get you started if you get into the mood to organize everything you’ve ever owned in your life.

1. Use binder clips attached to your desk to organize cords.

Tired of all your cords getting tangled while you’re trying to work? Does it ever ruin the rhythm you’re in when you can’t find your phone charger, or it’s not all the way plugged in, or the cord is all twisted, etc.? Here’s the easiest way to fix your problem! Clip large binder clips to the edge of your desk with the arms bent out. Slide the charging cords into the arms in order to keep them separated and organized. It’s the creative storage alternative to a bundle of cords on the floor, a drawer full of tangled chargers, or loose wires hanging all over your desk.

2. Hang your laundry hamper on the back of your bedroom door.

We all know the people who devote an entire corner to their dirty clothes pile. A laundry hamper might be included in the corner, but more than likely they’ve draped clothes on and around the actual hamper. It’s a sight for sore eyes and can take attention away from the parts of the room you want people to notice first. Instead of taking an entire corner for your dirty laundry, store it on the back of your door! You’ll force yourself to put the clothes inside the bag/hamper, and you’ll conserve space in your room.

3. Use shower curtain rings to save space in your closet.

I have never before considered hanging all of my tanks on one hanger. I didn’t think it was possible — but it is! If you use shower curtain rings to clip all of your tank tops to one hanger, you’ll conserve tons of space in your closet and be able to easily locate your “tank of the day.”

4. Spiffy up under the sink with a tension rod for your cleaners.

You can always tell a person’s commitment to cleanliness by looking under their kitchen sink. Is it organized? Or full of cleaners that have never been touched? Are they thrown around, with no order at all? If you’re tired of searching through a landfill of cleaners under the sink every time you go for a trash bag, it’s time to organize! A creative storage alternative for this problem area is a tension rod! Suspend your cleaners on the rod by hanging them.

5. Use command strips to store your bathroom appliances.

Do you get tired of your straightener cord getting tangled with your hair dryer? Me too. Here’s a quick, creative way to store your bathroom appliances. Buy some Command strips with large hooks from anywhere like Target or Walmart. Peel and stick them onto the back of any cabinet door (but probably most usefully in your bathroom). Be sure to wait a few minutes to really let the adhesive work its magic. Wrap up your cords and you’re ready to hang!

6. Finally organize that sock drawer with some old cardboard.

You might think you’re the only one who’s going to notice that your socks don’t match? Think again. It’s time to organize that sock drawer once and for all! Here’s a creative storage idea for all your never-ending mess of socks in the top drawer of your dresser:

Cut slots into old cardboard to create dividers for your drawer! You can make them as small or large as you want – but giving each pair their own slot, you’ll have a much easier time finding a pair in the mornings!

7. Create more hanging space with a refurbished ladder.

Exposing your wardrobe is something that might take a little getting used to. So instead, you could use this as a coat rack, or a place to hang the sweaters you wear most often. Even better, there’s room on top of the ladder to slide boxes or stack books. Painting the piece an accent color will really make it “pop” in the room — a great addition to any space! You would probably never think to use a ladder as a creative storage piece!

8. Make use of a small shower with an additional shower rod.

Hanging your products upside down and clipped to a curtain rod puts them in the perfect position for use! You’ll no longer have to bend over (and knock things into the floor) to use your face wash or body soap. A small shower can be frustrating if there isn’t enough room to store all your products — especially if you have a roommate! Create more room by adding a second shower rod and clipping squeeze tubes in the optimal position for use! It’s a perfect example of creative storage.

9. Use magnets to store makeup.

By putting small magnets on the back of your makeup products and using a board with a magnet underneath, you’ll be able to quickly (and easily!) find the product you’re looking for. Forget digging through a makeup bag to find your favorite eye-shadow; here’s a way you can store your makeup that’s a bit out-of-the-box!

Don’t feel guilty for starting off your New Year in a disorganized fashion — you still have time to redeem yourself! It’s never too late to get organized or look into alternative ways to store your (endless) collection of items. Whether you “do it yourself” or you purchase items from a store — creative storage will make you feel good while making your place look good, too!
